Topics: Sound in Yoga

Music has always been a powerful force in my life. In fact, Earth called me from my mother's womb as she was teaching a piano lesson! The sounds and vibrations of music have always influenced my mood, energy and behavior, but I did not always consciously recognize that. Over the last decade, I slowly learned how music can act as an expression of feelings and emotion - it can alter our mindstate and shift our mood. When I feel overwhelmed or stressed, I turn to instruments to recenter and relax. My primary instrument has always been the piano, but I also enjoy playing guitar, kalimba, wooden flute, harmonium, and percussion instruments. I am always eager to learn more instruments.

Music in yoga is an incredible tool that can help guide where we go in our flow, deepen our meditation, and influence the breath. We do so much more than listen to music - we feel music and our bodies physically and chemically respond. Although playing instruments may be intimidating to some, there are so many options that require little to no prior knowledge or experience. Of course, music can also be shared with intentionally curated playlists by calling on the talents of artists across the world. Together we will explore the many facets of music including frequencies, keys, tempo, lyrics, and more. We will also explore sequencing, mantras, chakras, and some of the many instruments you can carry into class with you. I am looking forward to listening and learning with you.
